Closures and Handles Follow the Serving Format

Fold-top cartons use overlapping panels to close above the contents. The flap layout and fill level need to work together, leaving room to shut the pack without food pressing into the closure. Discuss vents if steam release is part of the brief. Releasing steam can also reduce heat retention.

Handled takeaway carry boxes need a clear brief too. State whether food touches the carton or sits inside separate containers, and include the combined filled weight. For food served straight from an open pack, cardboard food trays offer a different starting point.

Portion Fit Includes Space to Fill and Close

Give dimensions in millimetres and describe the portion as it will be packed. Include toppings, wraps or separate sauce pots that occupy space inside. Small and large takeaway boxes should be defined by the meal and usable space.

On tapered cartons, record both the top opening and base dimensions. Usable fill volume, external footprint and closed height describe different parts of the pack. A capacity in millilitres does not establish the weight of every food placed inside.

Check loading and closing with the intended portion before agreeing the size. There should be space for the lid or flaps to close and for customers to reach the food. A change in portion or arrangement can affect the fit even when the menu name stays the same.

Board and Food-Contact Surface Work Together

White paperboard provides a base for printed meal cartons. Kraft takeaway boxes offer a brown appearance, with colours and small text assessed on the chosen stock. For direct food contact, the board and contact surface need to suit the actual food and serving conditions.

A functional internal barrier has a different job from an exterior decorative finish. Coating chemistry and board thickness should follow the approved application. For several sealed meal packs, a separate corrugated carry or transport outer can be assessed around their dimensions and load.

Exterior Printing Identifies Your Meal Variants

Printed takeaway boxes can carry your restaurant logo, menu graphics and promotional artwork. A simple design may need only one or two exterior colours. CMYK suits full-colour artwork, while Pantone spot colours can be considered for brand-led designs, with approval on the selected stock.

Leave a clear area for staff to identify the dish or order. Keep essential details readable when the carton is closed, including where a handle or overlapping flap covers a panel. Window requests also need the viewing area and any film agreed for the food’s temperature and use.

Matt or gloss exterior varnish can be discussed for the chosen appearance. Foil, embossing or spot UV may suit a special presentation brief, subject to the finished pack’s suitability. Establish the functional specification before selecting decorative effects.

Confirm Packing and Artwork Before Production

Agree whether the chosen carton arrives flat, nested or erected, as this affects storage and kitchen assembly. Discuss any physical sample, print proof or filled-food evaluation you need, including scope and charges. Filled checks should reflect loading, closure, stacking and carrying under the intended conditions.
