Product details
Small, regular and large can mean very different things from one restaurant to another. Rather than relying on a supposed universal size, French fry boxes should be selected around the portion you actually serve and the carton structure being used. A deep scoop-style pack and a wider open-top carton can hold and present the same quantity differently.
For a custom specification, it helps to know the approximate portion, required opening and how staff will fill and hand over the pack. Healey Packaging can then develop custom French fry boxes around the way your restaurant, takeaway or food-service operation works.
Fries are usually served quickly, so easy access matters. An open-top structure gives staff a straightforward way to fill the carton while allowing customers to eat directly from it. Scoop-style formats can provide the familiar fast-food presentation associated with fries while offering a large front panel for branding.
Other carton structures may be appropriate where portions, toppings or service requirements differ. The best format isn’t simply the one that looks most recognisable. It should be comfortable to fill during busy service and appropriate for the quantity of fries being served. For businesses offering several portion sizes, a family of related carton dimensions can create a more consistent system across the menu.
There is no single industry dimension that every small, medium or large fries portion must follow. Fries vary in cut, serving weight and how loosely they are placed into the carton. Chunkier chips can also occupy space differently from thin French fries. That is why custom French fry packaging should be developed using the actual serving requirement.
If you’re replacing existing packaging, the current carton and portion can provide a useful starting point. For a new menu, dimensions can be developed around the intended serving quantity and selected box style. This helps avoid a pack that makes the portion look lost or one that staff have to overfill just to make it appear complete.
Packaging used in a busy takeaway has to work quickly. Staff may be filling one carton after another during peak service. Complicated closures or awkward openings can slow that process even if they look good in a packaging mock-up.
For fast food fry boxes, practical considerations include how easily the carton can be erected, how wide the filling opening is and whether the finished pack is comfortable to hand to the customer.
Storage before use matters as well. Where suitable, flat-packed paperboard cartons can reduce the space occupied by empty packaging behind the counter or in a stockroom. The structure should support the service routine rather than add another step to it.
French fries and chips naturally introduce oil, but ordinary cardboard should not automatically be described as greaseproof. The required board and any grease-resistant treatment should be considered according to the food, expected contact and chosen carton format.
For takeaway fries boxes, a suitable grease-resistant option may be appropriate where oil marking or absorption is a concern. The actual performance depends on the board and barrier specification supplied.
Where direct food contact is required, this should be identified when the packaging is specified so suitable material requirements can be considered. Grease resistance remains one part of the fry-box specification rather than the entire purpose of the page: the carton still needs to fit the portion and work efficiently during service.
A fry carton may only be used for a short time, but much of that time is spent in front of the customer. That makes its printable panels useful branding space. Printed French fry boxes can carry your logo, brand colours, patterns or campaign artwork. Restaurants with a strong visual identity can coordinate the design with other packaging without making every pack structurally identical.
For independent takeaways and growing food brands, branded French fry boxes also make an otherwise functional item feel deliberately connected to the business serving it. Print should be planned around the actual dieline so important artwork remains visible after the carton is folded and filled.
In the UK, customers are just as likely to ask for chips as French fries. Chip boxes can therefore be relevant to this range, particularly for takeaway and casual food-service businesses. The important factor is still the actual product and portion.
Chunkier chips, heavily loaded fries or portions served with toppings may require a different shape from a simple open-top fry carton. Rather than assuming one cardboard chip box works for every menu, the structure can be adjusted around what the kitchen actually serves.
Healey Packaging supplies French fry packaging UK restaurants, takeaways, cafés, caterers, food trucks, quick-service brands and packaging resellers can specify around their operations. Having supported thousands of packaging and print projects, we can assist with bespoke dimensions, suitable paperboard constructions, grease-resistant options where required, dielines and custom printing.
Tell us your approximate portion, preferred carton style, required quantity and whether direct food contact or additional grease resistance needs to be considered. We can then develop custom printed French fry boxes around the way the packaging will actually be filled, served and used.

There is no universal size for small, medium or large portions. The dimensions should be selected around your serving quantity, type of fries and chosen carton structure.
Open-top and scoop-style cartons are common options because they can provide convenient filling and serving. The appropriate structure depends on the portion, presentation and service method.
Ordinary cardboard should not automatically be considered greaseproof. Suitable grease-resistant board or barrier options can be considered where required, with performance depending on the actual material specification.
