SBS Board
Smooth white board for premium printed retail packaging.
Custom vegetable boxes give growers, wholesalers and produce retailers sturdy packs for moving, stacking and displaying fresh vegetables, with bespoke sizes, print and ventilation options.
Product details
Weight matters when packing fresh produce. So does shape. Root vegetables can place considerable pressure on the base of a carton. Tomatoes and peppers need more protection from crushing. Leafy vegetables take up space without adding much weight, while mixed produce orders create another set of packing problems.
This is why custom vegetable boxes should be specified around what is being packed, how much it weighs and how far it has to travel. Using one carton for an entire produce range can lead to wasted space, damaged stock and unnecessary board use.
A vegetable carton may be lifted several times before reaching its final destination. It leaves the packing area, moves onto a pallet, passes through distribution and may then be handled again by a retailer or delivery driver. Weak bases become obvious quickly.
Board grade, flute profile, folds and closure style all affect how much weight a box can carry. Cardboard boxes for fruit and vegetables intended for wholesale distribution usually need a different specification from lightweight packs used for farm-shop displays. The actual load should guide the structure.
Ventilation holes are common in vegetable box packaging. They can help airflow around fresh produce where the supply chain and product require it. There is a trade-off, though. Every opening removes part of the board.
Poorly positioned cut-outs can weaken corners and side walls, particularly when filled cartons are stacked. Ventilation should be treated as part of the structural design rather than added at the end because a produce box “usually has holes”.
Vegetable boxes spend a lot of time sitting underneath other vegetable boxes. That changes how they need to be designed. Side walls must resist bowing. Corners need to carry weight. The base should remain stable when boxes are moved across warehouses or loaded onto vehicles.
Small and large vegetable box formats may require different board specifications even when the artwork remains identical. For growers and wholesalers, reducing crushed cartons can also mean fewer damaged products and rejected deliveries.
Some produce stays inside the packaging while it is sold. In that situation, the carton becomes part of the display. Vegetable display boxes can use lower front panels, open tops or die-cut sections to make products easier to see and pick.
A printed vegetable box design can also carry farm branding, product origin, handling information and other useful details.
The structure still needs to perform, but appearance matters more when customers see the shipping carton on the shop floor.
A vegetable subscription box rarely contains the same produce every week. One delivery may include potatoes, carrots and onions. The next could contain leafy greens, tomatoes and seasonal vegetables.
The carton needs enough strength for heavier orders without becoming unnecessarily large for lighter ones. Dividers and internal supports can also be considered when delicate produce is packed alongside heavier vegetables.
For seasonal vegetable box programmes, getting the size range right can reduce void space and make fulfilment easier throughout the year.
Empty packaging takes up warehouse space too. Flat pack vegetable boxes can be stored and transported before assembly, helping produce businesses manage larger packaging quantities more efficiently. The closing and assembly method should match the packing operation.
A small farm shop filling a few dozen orders has different requirements from a wholesaler working through thousands of cartons. Good packaging needs to make sense on the packing line as well as during delivery.
Corrugated cardboard is widely used for vegetable packaging because it provides a useful balance of strength, printability and relatively low weight. The appropriate board grade depends on product weight, stacking conditions, storage environment and distribution route.
Recyclable fibre-based materials can be considered where the complete specification supports the claim. For direct food contact applications, material suitability should be confirmed according to the actual product and intended use.
Healey Packaging develops custom vegetable boxes for growers, produce wholesalers, farm shops, retailers and subscription businesses. A bulk box of vegetables, printed retail display and mixed fruit and vegetable box delivery do not need identical packaging.
We work from the produce weight, dimensions, stacking requirements, packing process and route to market before recommending the structure. With experience across thousands of packaging projects, our team can support structural design, sampling, custom printing and repeat wholesale production.
