SBS Board
Smooth white board for premium printed retail packaging.
Foot lock tray packaging uses interlocking tabs at the base to create a stable, open-top tray without glue during packing. It suits retail, food and presentation products that need quick access and reliable support.
Product details
A foot lock tray is a folding tray that uses locking tabs, or “feet”, to secure its base and side panels during assembly. Once the tabs are engaged, the tray holds its shape without needing adhesive at the packing stage.
The open-top construction makes products easy to load, remove and display. It can work as standalone packaging, an inner tray or part of a wider presentation pack. Within our packaging box styles library, foot lock trays sit alongside auto-bottom, double-wall and other tray structures designed for different packing speeds and product weights.
This structure is useful when you want the simplicity of a tray but need a more defined locking mechanism than basic folded corners.
Typical applications include:
Because the top remains accessible, operators can place products directly into position rather than feeding them through a narrow carton opening.
For bakery products, four corner cake boxes provide another tray construction specifically suited to quick loading of cakes and desserts.
The tray is supplied flat. During assembly, its side panels are raised and the locking tabs are folded into corresponding slots or retaining sections. These connections secure the corners and help the tray remain square once loaded.
The design is manually erected, which is an important distinction from an auto bottom tray. An auto-bottom structure uses pre-glued panels that form as the pack is opened, making it better suited to operations where assembly speed is a priority.
A foot lock design may make more sense where production volumes are moderate and avoiding a pre-glued base is preferred.
The locking tabs hold the tray together without requiring glue during packing.
The open top gives operators clear access, which is useful for delicate products, sets and items that need careful positioning.
Unassembled trays take up relatively little warehouse space and can be erected as required.
The structure can be used independently or developed to work with an outer component where more enclosure is required.
If stronger side walls are the priority, double wall tray boxes use folded wall sections to create greater edge rigidity.
The best tray depends on what happens after the product is loaded. A foot lock tray prioritises straightforward mechanical assembly and open access. open ended tray boxes offer a simpler open-ended format where products may need to slide into or out of the tray.
Where the contents require full top coverage and a more presentation-led opening, double wall tray lid boxes add reinforced walls and a separate lid. The choice should therefore be based on packing method, product weight, access and required enclosure rather than appearance alone.
A foot lock only performs properly when its tabs, slots and tray dimensions work together.
Before approving the dieline, check:
For heavier contents, a sample should be tested with the actual product. This helps confirm that the locking points remain engaged and the tray does not distort under load.
