SBS Board
Smooth white board for premium printed retail packaging.
Full flat double tray packaging uses two flat-folding tray components to create a practical base-and-cover format, giving products broad access during packing and a clean presentation when assembled.
Product details
A full flat double tray is a two-piece folding carton structure made from a base tray and a corresponding upper tray or cover. Both components can be supplied flat and erected when required, helping reduce storage space compared with pre-assembled presentation boxes.
The format is useful for products that are easier to place into an open tray than insert through a conventional carton opening. It also gives buyers a lift-off opening experience. You can compare it with other tray and two-piece structures in our packaging box styles library.
Choose this structure when easy loading, broad product access and separate top-and-bottom components suit the packing process.
Potential applications include:
Because the complete top can be removed, the product is immediately accessible after opening. This can be useful for neatly arranged sets or products presented with an insert.
The lower component folds into a shallow or deep tray that holds the product. A second tray is formed separately and fitted over the base as the cover. Unlike a standard tuck-end carton, there is no narrow end opening through which the product must be loaded. Packing teams can place the product directly into the open base and then fit the upper section.
The fit between both components matters. Too much clearance can make the cover feel loose, while insufficient clearance may make the box difficult to close or open. Where only an open tray is required, foot lock tray boxes provide a mechanically locking alternative without a separate upper tray.
Both structures use a tray-and-cover concept, but their construction can serve different priorities. Double wall tray lid boxes use folded double-wall sections to add rigidity around the tray edges. They are worth considering where side-wall support and a more substantial presentation structure are priorities.
A full flat double tray focuses on the practicality of two flat-folding components and straightforward top loading. The better choice depends on product weight, required rigidity, assembly time and presentation expectations.
Storage efficiency can matter when packaging is ordered and packed in volume. Supplying both tray components flat means they can be erected closer to the point of use instead of occupying their finished cubic volume in storage.
Other practical advantages can include:
For a one-piece structure where a lid remains connected to the tray, double locked wall with lid boxes provide a useful structural comparison.
Two-piece trays rely on accurate tolerances between the upper and lower sections. Before approving the dieline, check:
An insert can help prevent movement where the product is substantially smaller than the tray. For multi-item packs requiring separate cells, custom fence partitions may also be considered where appropriate. Sampling with the actual contents is especially useful for confirming lid fit and overall rigidity.

It is a two-piece folding structure consisting of a separate base tray and upper tray or cover, with both components designed to be stored flat before assembly.
No. A full flat double tray is a folding carton structure, whereas rigid boxes are generally supplied as formed, non-collapsible components.
Yes. Inserts can be developed to position individual products or organise presentation sets.
The structure is designed around flat-folding components, making unassembled storage more space-efficient.
Suitability depends on the dimensions, board specification, tray construction and packed weight. Heavier applications should be sampled and tested before production.
