Custom Stand-Up Pouches Start With the Contents

Coffee beans, loose tea and fine powders behave differently inside a pouch. Piece size and bulk density affect the space needed, while oil or moisture sensitivity can change the material requirements. Tell us about the actual product before selecting a size or surface appearance.

When planning food packaging, include the filling temperature and expected storage conditions in your brief. Agree the intended contact use and supporting documentation for the selected construction. A pouch chosen for one product should not automatically become the specification for another.

Plan Filling and Reclosure Together

Resealable stand-up pouches let customers close the zip between uses. That opening feature needs to work with the filling process and the space available above the product. Tell us whether your process requires an initial heat seal above the zip.

The zip and initial seal perform different jobs. Plan a clean sealing area and enough access for loading the contents. Product dust or residue must be considered when reviewing the sealing process. Film compatibility and sealing conditions need agreement before a full packing run.

Measure the Pouch Around a Real Fill

Use width × overall height × bottom gusset, in millimetres, when preparing your size brief. Confirm whether the gusset figure describes its fully opened depth or folded halves. An existing supplier’s measurements may follow a different convention.

Overall dimensions do not describe all the usable filling space. Side seals, the zip position and the top sealing area affect how the contents fit. Include the required headspace rather than filling the pouch to its overall height.

A 250g target does not identify one universal pouch size. The same weight of tea leaves and powder can occupy different volumes. An actual-product fill trial helps assess capacity, closing space and standing balance. Check the filled shape as well as the unfilled pouch dimensions.

Agree the Film Behind the Appearance

Kraft, clear and metallic appearances describe what a customer sees. The full film construction determines what is being specified. Agree the layers, inner sealing surface and total thickness in microns alongside the product and packing requirements.

For moisture- or oxygen-sensitive contents, identify the relevant barrier need and evidence required for the intended storage conditions. Material names alone do not establish a shelf-life result. Film data and the performance of a finished, sealed pouch also need to be distinguished.

If your brief calls for Mylar foil bags, distinguish actual aluminium foil from metallised film or a metallic appearance. A clear window changes part of the construction too. Agree its position and material with the pouch specification.

Keep Printed Information Clear of Seals and Folds

We offer full-colour stand-up pouch printing for logos, product information and different artwork versions. Give the front panel a clear focus, with supporting details placed where customers can read them. A design should still make sense when the filled pouch changes shape.

Use the agreed pouch layout when placing text, barcodes and window areas. Keep important details clear of seals, the zipper and gusset folds. Clear or metallic backgrounds may need a white ink layer; establish that requirement before approving artwork.

Specify whether you want a matte or gloss appearance so the surface treatment can be agreed with the construction. A decorative metallic effect is a separate decision from choosing a barrier layer. Set Out Each Size and Artwork Version Clearly

List quantities separately for each pouch size and printed design. There is no minimum order quantity, including when you are planning a launch or repeat supply. Keep product changes visible in the brief, even when the branding stays the same.
