SBS Board
Smooth white board for premium printed retail packaging.
Our custom notebook boxes are empty packs for paper notebooks, journals, diaries and planners, with the layout based on your finished product. Use them to present a single journal for retail or arrange a notebook with your own pen and gift items. Healey Packaging offers custom sizing with no minimum order quantity, so each brief can start with the contents you intend to pack. The opening, internal support and artwork should work together, giving the notebook a defined place and leaving room to lift it out.
Product details
Start with what customers receive when they open the pack. A single hardback journal needs a different layout from a planner, pen and message card. List every intended item and explain how you want it presented.
For shop sales, the closed box needs space to identify the notebook and its edition. A gift pack may place more emphasis on the arrangement revealed inside. Our retail packaging options provide a broader comparison when notebooks sit alongside other packaged stationery products.
A folding carton can enclose a single notebook for retail. For a removable lid, compare two-piece lid-and-base boxes, which open from above. A slipcase with an inner tray gives a sliding opening and needs enough room for the loaded tray to move.
Hinged presentation formats keep the lid attached. Agree the closure and opening space for the chosen design, including any lifting feature. A printed sleeve or belly band adds branding around a notebook but leaves parts of it exposed.
Measure the finished notebook closed, recording length, width and thickness in millimetres. Include hardback cover overhang, wire binding, an elastic closure and any pen loop. A5, A4 and A6 describe notebook formats; they do not establish the finished box dimensions.
Keep the notebook measurements separate from the box’s internal and external sizes. An insert reduces the usable space inside, while board thickness affects the external footprint. The quoted dimensions should make clear which space is being described.
Allow for loading, closing and removal when reviewing the layout. The lid should close without pressing a pen clip or binding into the cover. Check the notebook in its intended packed position, including loose bookmarks or other supplied pieces.
For notebook-and-pen packaging, a die-cut paperboard insert can be assessed with a notebook recess and separate pen channel. Include the pen’s length, widest point and clip projection. Its position should leave room to remove both items without catching the notebook cover.
A finger notch or lift feature may help with a close-fitting recess. Cards and other flat items also need an agreed position so they do not obstruct the closure. Confirm any ribbon, printed card or interleaving material separately from the empty box order.
If pens are also sold individually, our separate pen presentation boxes provide another packaging option. This lets a combined set and a standalone pen have different layouts. The notebook and writing instruments remain your own contents.
White folding paperboard, including suitable FBB or SBS stock, provides a printable surface for retail cartons. Kraft paperboard gives a brown background, so artwork colours and small text need assessing on that stock. Select the grade around the notebook’s weight, box span, folds and internal support.
Paper-wrapped rigid greyboard suits journal gifts and presentation sets. The wrap and structural board have separate roles in the finished construction. Corrugated bookwraps or mailers can be assessed for postal orders, heavier journals and multipacks.
Plan dispatch around the complete packed item. A retail presentation box may need a separate shipping outer, with space for any required support. Flat or assembled supply should also be agreed against your storage and packing process.
Full-colour artwork can carry illustrations, product details and a coordinated design across notebook editions. Spot colours may suit a simple logo-led brief, with colour approval on the selected material. Keep the notebook title, ruling or planner year easy to identify where those details matter.
Matt and gloss treatments change the surface appearance. Foil can highlight a title or logo; while embossing or debossing adds raised or recessed detail. Agree the selected effect for the chosen board rather than combining finishes without a clear purpose.
Place artwork on the agreed structural layout. A dieline marks cuts, folds and joins; a visual mock-up shows appearance, while a physical sample check fit. Confirm any proof or prototype required, including its scope and charges.
Include the notebook measurements, total packed weight and quantity for each size or design in your enquiry. Upload reference images through the quote form. Email print-ready PDF, AI or PSD artwork to sales@healeypackaging.co.uk with your enquiry reference.

Check each notebook against the proposed internal space and support. A box deep enough for the thicker version may leave excess space around the slimmer one. The layout review can establish whether shared packaging is practical.
It can, because wire may project beyond the cover and change the thickest point. Supply the revised notebook measurements before repeating the order. Check the opening and insert as well as the outer carton.
Adding a pen changes the contents and may require more width, depth or a revised insert. Its clip also needs clearance when the lid closes. Review the complete set before approving the revised specification.
Print it where it helps buyers identify a dated planner. If the packaging will also serve undated editions, consider which details should stay fixed and which change. Record the artwork version against each planner edition.
Include its intended position in the fit review. A loose ribbon can cross a fold, tray edge or closure, so assess how it sits when packed.
